David Ignatius, on 2 August 2008, in The Daily Star, Lebanon ( The tea leaves say America is not about to attack Iran), makes the following points:

1. The US is likely to open an interest section (an office for US diplomats) in Tehran.

2. Mike McConnell, the director of national intelligence, and Adm. Michael Mullen, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, have recently been to Israel to explain why an attack on Iran would damage US national interests.

McConnell and Mullen told the Israelis that the United States would oppose overflights of Iraqi airspace to attack Iran.

3. The US military believes an attack on Iran would only slightly delay any possible Iranian nuclear program.

4. The US believes an attack on Iran would strengthen Ahmadinejad at a time when he faces growing economic difficulty.

5. The US believes an attack on Iran would undermine US policy in Iraq.
